Odense, Denmark (1998 and 2000)

A high standard youth orchestra of students from the Scandinavian area and beyond was formed at the Odense Music Academy with yearly courses.  Mark was invited as woodwind coach.  This brought Mark in contact with Antoni Witt, and Marek Stackowski, Director of the Krakow Academy of Music, who also brought some of their students to take part.  Herbert Blomstedt was also part of the team.  Mark learned a great deal of how to overcome technical conducting, and musical hurdles in the music by Lutosławski, (ie Concerto for Orchestra) by watching Antoni Witt in action.  The town is very close to the birthplace of Carl Nielsen, as well as Hans Christian Anderson.  The Danish players displayed a natural understanding of the joy and outrageous humour in Nielsen’s orchestral music, which can seem more austere in other countries.
